The Rule of Law

At Lobley Hill, we help children understand that rules and laws are there to keep everyone safe, protect our rights and help our communities work fairly. We encourage pupils to understand the reasons behind rules and to recognise the important role they play in everyday life.

We do this by:

  • Understanding our CARE values and expectations: We make sure our school expectations are clear, fair and consistent. Children are encouraged to reflect upon our school values and understand why these are important for creating a happy, safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Understanding right and wrong: Through everyday conversations, stories, fables and literature, we encourage children to think about choices and consequences and to develop a strong sense of fairness and responsibility.
  • Learning about laws and rules: We help pupils understand how laws are made and why they are important. Children learn that rules help people live and work together fairly, while also protecting those who may be vulnerable.
  • Understanding how the law protects us: We explore how living within the rule of law helps to protect individuals and ensures that everyone is treated fairly and has rights and responsibilities.
  • Learning from our community: Visits and activities involving our local police officers give children opportunities to learn about safety, responsibility and the role of the police within our community.
  • Developing an understanding of different laws: As children progress through school, they are introduced to age-appropriate aspects of the law. We also encourage them to recognise that laws and rules can be influenced by different cultures, beliefs and religious traditions.
  • Resolving disagreements positively: We use restorative approaches to help children reflect on their actions, understand how others may have been affected and find positive ways to resolve conflict. This forms an important part of our approach to positive relationships and helps children learn from their experiences.

Through this work, we aim to help our pupils become responsible, respectful and caring members of our school and wider community, who understand the importance of rules, fairness and taking responsibility for their actions.
