Respect and Tolerance

We want every child at Lobley Hill to grow up understanding and respecting the differences that make each person unique. We encourage children to be curious about the world around them, to listen to different perspectives and to treat everyone with kindness and respect.

We do this by:

  • Celebrating individual differences: We promote respect and kindness throughout school life and encourage children to appreciate the many qualities, backgrounds and experiences that make us all unique.
  • Learning about different cultures and beliefs: Through our books and literature, Religious Education, PSHE and wider curriculum, children learn about their own and other people's cultures, beliefs, traditions and ways of life.
  • Challenging prejudice and discrimination: We help children recognise unfair or discriminatory behaviour and understand why treating others with respect and fairness is so important.
  • Learning about different places of worship: Where appropriate to our curriculum, children have opportunities to visit local churches and other places of worship. These experiences help pupils develop their understanding of different faiths and communities.
  • Developing independent and critical thinking: Across the curriculum, we encourage children to ask questions, listen carefully, consider different viewpoints and develop their own informed opinions.
  • Understanding and celebrating diversity: Through literature, PSHE, classroom discussions and visitors to school, we explore the different experiences of people in our society. This includes differences in faith, ethnicity, disability, gender and sexuality, as well as different family circumstances, such as being a looked-after child or a young carer.

Our aim is to ensure that every child feels valued, respected and included, while developing the confidence and understanding to show the same respect and kindness to others.
